Ingredients:
1 pkg Betty Crocker German Chocolate cake mix (use just the dry mix)
3/4 cup margarine (not butter, they turn out hard)
2/3 cup evaporated milk, divided in half (ie 1/3 and 1/3 cup)
14 oz pkg light caramel candies
1 cup milk chocolate chips
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 F. Unwrap caramels (do this first, because it takes longer than you think). After you have done this, in a separate bowl, combine cake mix, margarine and 1/3 cup evaporated milk. Stir until dough holds. Press 1/2 of the dough into a 9x13" pan. Bake for 7 minutes.
While the dough is baking, combine caramels and the other1/3 cup evaporated milk into a pan. This can be done on the stove top or in the microwave. Stir often. Let it come to the point where it is just coming to a boil. Remove from heat.
After the first dough in pan is baked, remove from oven and carefully ladle or drip the caramel sauce over the top. Do not try to spread it firmly, as it will disturb the partially baked dough. Sprinkle 1 cup chocolate chips over the top of the caramel sauce. Now crumble or drop by rounded teaspoons the remaining half of the dough all over the top. Bake for 20 more minutes.
My Suggestions: These brownies were so much fun to make. The only thing I would change is just buying a can of caramel. I know making them probably taste a million times better, but it was so messy to make and took forever to clean the pot. I also had a hard time dividing the brownies in the pan so I just put all of the mix in the pan. Stuck them in the oven for 5 mins, then pulled them out, poured the caramel on top w/ chocolate chips, then baked for another 15 mins.
